• From human Mesenchymal Stem Cells to insulin producing cells
Prof. Dr. Mohamed A Ghoneim, professor Emeritus of Urology and Nephrology, Urology and Nephrolofgy center, Mansoura.
Mesenchymal stem cells were differentiated by a 3 step protocol to form insulin producing cells. Initially were used to treat diabetic nude mice. Thereafter, human cells were encapsulated and used to treat diabetic dogs. Problems with encapsulation were identified.Differentiated stem cells from SD rates were loaded onto commercially available PLGA scaffold. These were then transplanted subcutaneously in diabetic SD rats .. with moderate success. In search for more bio compatible material for different scaffolds were tested.
